The 10th Virginia Regiment

Guide for Camp Follower Clothing and Personal Biography

Purpose: To list the types of information needed to research and document a basic impression .

Instructions: Each article of clothing must have the following aspects listed; please click here for notes pertaining to campfollower clothing.

1) Style or Make; the unit will list a set of documented stock clothing patterns appropriate for the time period and ethnic makeup of the unit. Members may research clothing styles on their own provided they fit with the general unit impression.
2) Fabric: textile or fiber type , plus a description of the weave or texture if appropriate.
3) Color: note if the item is solid, checked, striped etc.

Clothing Articles may include: Hat, Cap, Chemise or Shift, Bodice, Short Gown, Petty Coat, v
Stockings, Shoes, Handkerchief, Apron, Stays, Pockets

Accouterments may include: knapsack (military of civilian), knife, haversack, etc.

Biographical sketch: Write a paragraph or so which should include ;
1) Ethnic origin
2) Place of birth
3) Residence before the war and length of time in the Colonies
4) Occupation prior to becoming attached to the Continental Army
5) Reason for joining the unit
6) Time and place upon joining the unit.
7) Duties with the unit

A sample biography might go as follows:

I was born in Bucks County Pennsylvania of Irish parents in 1756 and went into domestic
service at a fairly young age. My first employer was a merchant family from Philadelphia.
They were real tartars and Tories to boot, so I left them to work for a Quaker family back in
Bucks County. They were kind but were unable to retain me due to misfortunes during the
fighting with Lord Howe's army in 1777. I found my way to the winter camp of the
Continental Army at Valley Forge in February of 1778. I was first employed cleaning and
salting shad during the spring run. A while later I came to the notice of Col. Davies, who
was the newly appointed commander of the 14th Virginia Regiment. He wanted his soldiers
to be have the best appearance of the Virginia Line, so I was invited to join the Regiment as
a laundress and seamstress, becoming betrothed to a private soldier.
